MANY who are struggling with, or have overcome, methamphetamine addiction often speak of being plagued by demons, or of “possession” by negative forces preying on their weakened state. They flatly deny dreaming or hallucinating, insisting that their experiences are lucid, sober and objective.

Could there be a paranormal explanation for the vivid and seemingly real visual and auditory hallucinations experienced by meth abusers? Why do some who have made miraculous recoveries insist that they had a “spiritual awakening” – a flash of profound insight about their condition that served to propel them from the darkest despair into the brightest light [see Infinite Potential] – and were “saved by God”? And why are swaths of people, including a vast proportion of gay men, being disempowered at this critical time in mankind’s evolution by a substance dubbed the devil’s drug and Satan dust?
Here, we consider a few of the weird, yet compelling, claims of a religious, albeit Satanic, significance for meth’s manifestation amidst a world teetering on a cliff edge of chaos and confusion. It may prove disturbing reading for some…
Mark, a recovering user, describes his transformation under the spell of methamphetamine in 2002. “I was a relatively spiritual person pre-meth, always guided by a sense of goodness and an inner knowing that love was the only true power I needed in my life. Meth changed that utterly. It extinguished my connection to my soul and created an opening for something outside of me – a ‘negative entity’ – to enter and influence my judgements. Those who knew me say I soon became the total antithesis of all I stood for and believed in.
“My thoughts towards some of my friends would verge on the murderous,” Mark continues, “particularly those who were quite spiritual. This voice in my head would convince me that they were evil and that it was my role to ‘cleanse’ them from the earth. Thank God I resisted, but the urge was so great at times that I would drive as fast and as far as I could to be out of harm’s reach. Once, at a train station, this voice goaded me to push a particular stranger into the path of an incoming train. Why him I don’t know, but you do hear of incidents where innocent bystanders are murdered for no apparent reason. My friends tell me that had I not ‘returned from the devil’, they would have had me exorcised!”

Doug, a holistic practitioner from LA, was a regular on the US party circuit throughout the 1990s. “It was an amazing time,” he recalls. “The energy of so many gay men openly dancing and celebrating created something that was both potent and exciting, and was a catalyst for many discovering their spiritual selves. I know plenty who had their spiritual awakenings on the dance floor, particularly around the time ketamine came in.”
Doug noticed a perceptible change in vibe towards the end of the decade, as crystal arrived in force. “For a hypersensitive, intuitive person like myself, it felt like a gateway was opening at these events that was letting in an intense darkness and drowning out people’s spirit. At 2000’s Black Party [in New York City], I was looking out over a sea of bodies on Roseland’s massive dance floor, and I could make out the distinctive form of a devil-like face leering out of the mist formed by the dry ice high above the crowd. In 2002, I met a former New Yorker who’d ‘escaped the darkness’, as he put it, to live a reclusive life in Byron Bay, Australia. We were talking about how Tina had snuffed out the light of the party scene, and he just casually mentioned seeing the same devilish face at the same party, so then I knew I hadn’t imagined it.
“The music became intrinsically Satanic in tone,” notes Doug, “because the DJs weren’t immune to Tina. At my last party [Alegria, May 2002], I was aware of intensely dark forces at work, especially on those using Tina, which by then appeared to be just about everyone. Not only could I feel them, I could see them; shadowy forms flickering between the bodies, seeking out those whose auras were weakened enough to enter. The atmosphere at that event was sterile and totally devoid of love, as if the blackness of the thudding music and dense lighting was beckoning in the presence of a dark force that was literally possessing the crowd and turning them into emotionless zombies.
“For anyone experiencing hallucinations of any kind,” advises Doug, “it is important to know that demonic entities only have the power over you that you give them. React with fear and your experience will be a terrifying one. But laugh at them and even try to love them, and they instantly disappear, because they cannot exist in a positive situation, or love vibration. People are only vulnerable to hallucinations when your energy levels are totally depleted – your weakened state of mind and obliterated soul during the meth crash allows them to gain access. Meth literally is a ticket to hell.”

‘Elliot’ survived a suicide attempt in 2002 related to his meth addiction, but a miracle – or “an intense moment of realisation and clarity,” as he describes it – pulled him from the brink. He has since recovered and is now 20 months clean. “I was at conflict with the voices at the time. It got to a point where a tug of war was going on in my mind between the demons and my soul, if you like, which was trying to pull me back and save me. I was carrying a lot on my conscience back then. I was what you might call one of tina’s agents whose sole purpose, it seemed, was to attend the parties and turn as many gay men on to meth as possible. Outside of LA Tina barely had a look in, but suddenly she was everywhere. People like myself, who traveled from party to party, hastened that spread considerably.
“I must have turned on hundreds of men to Tina,” says Elliot. “I remember targeting a fresh-faced kid called Justin, just 24, fresh and naïve to it all, and he had this bright light about him. He placed his utmost trust in me, and I was intent only on extinguishing his light permanently. He moved to New York to be with me, and it took just four months – from October 1999 to March 2000 – for Tina and I to zap him dry and turn him into an emaciated, withered husk. Then I cut him loose and moved on to my next victim.
“When I say ‘I’, understand that’s who I was at the time but isn’t who I am now,” insists Elliot, “so it wasn’t really me, if that makes any sense? There were others like me; zombies ‘programed’ to infect as many as possible with the new virus, as we called her. Why was I saved? Perhaps because these days I devote all of my spare time to helping others in the process of recovery, drawing on my own experiences to guide and help them through.” •
