"My name is David Stuart, and I currently work in sexual health supporting gay men struggling with ChemSex issues. Meth factors highly in this work, as an extremely problematic and dangerous drug, and without doubt, responsible for a great many HIV infections amongst gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men using drugs, as well as other devastating consequences. Including, I'm very sad to say, too many deaths.
ChemSex is now highly placed on the public health agendas of many cities around the world, as well as featuring heavily in the media. This is a very good thing (despite some inevitable stigma-causing media), as raising awareness about the harms associated with meth must, simply must, be done as its use becomes more widespread. I try to do my part in raising awareness, but I must bow my head in gratitude and praise to you for your brave, exhausting and important efforts in the early 2000's when gay men's meth use and sex was less of a "public health concern" and, I imagine, a difficult and challenging topic to address. A little research led me to your work across three continents, attempting to rally health and campaign responses to this growing problem. Controversy will inevitably haunt anything associated with gay sex, disease and drug use, and I've no doubt that many of your attempts fell on deaf ears and reluctant organisations. I've also no doubt that it must have been frustrating and aggravating work; the sort of work that burns out many activists. You were, though, ahead of your time, and ahead of the epidemic we see now, and if you were never thanked for this work, then it is my overdue pleasure… to thank you.
